Rush hour crowds jostly for position on the underground train platform. A slight girl ? looking  younger than her seventeen years, was nervous yet excited as she felt the vibrations of the approaching train. It her first day at the  prestigious  Royal Academy of  music ? in London and daunting  enough for any teenager fresh a Scottish  farm. But this aspiring musician  faced  a bigger  challenge  then most : she was profoundly  deaf.

Evelyn Glennie loos of hearing had been gradual. Her mother remember noticing something was wrong when the eight- year old Evelyn was waiting ✋️ to play the piano. " They called  her name and she didn't  move .I suddenly realised she had't heard," says Isabel Glennie .for quite a while Evelyn managed to conceal her growing deafness from friends and teacher. But by the time she was eleven her marks had  deteriorated and her headmistress  urged her parents to take her to  aspecialist . It was then discovered that her hearing was severely impaired as a result of gradual never damage.damage.They were advised that she should be fitted  with hearing aids and sent to school ? for deaf.EEverything  suddenly  looking black, " says Evelyn.

But Evelyn was not going to give up. She was determined to lead a normal life and pursue  her interest in music. One day she noticed a girl ?  playing a xylophone  and decided that she wanted to play it too.most of the teacher discouraged her but percussionist Ron Forbes spotted  her potential  .he beganby tuning two large drums to different  nots. Don't listen though your ears," he would says. " try to sense it waist up and the lower one from the waist down, " Forbes repeated the exercise   and soon  Evelyn discovered that she  could sense certain nots in different parts of the body. " I had learnt to open  my mind  and body to sound and vibrations. " The rest was sheer determination and hard work.

She never looked  back from that point onwards. She toured the United kingdom ??  with  a younth orchestra and by the time she was  sixteen  she  had decided to make music ? ?  her life she auditioned for the  Royal   Academy of music and scored one of the  highest make  in the history of the Academy. She gradually moved from  orchestral work to solo performance. At the end  of her three- year course she  had captured most of the top award ?.

And for all this, Evelyn won't accept any hint of heroic achievement. " if you work and know where you are going  you' llget there " and  she got right to top worto's most sought after multipercussionist with a mastery of  some  thousand instruments ,and hectic international schedule.

Margie even  wrote about it that night ? ? in her diary. On the page 17May 2157. She  wrote, " found a real book! "?.

It was very old book ?. Margie 's grandfather once said that when he was a little boy his grandfather told him that there was a time when all stories were printed on paper ?.

They turned the pages, which were yellow and crinkly,  and it was awfully funny  to read words that stood still instead of moving the way they were supposed to - on a screen, you know. And then when they turned back to the page before, it had the same words on it that it had had when they read it the first time.

" Gee," said Tommy, " what a waste. When you're thought with the book, you just it away, I guess. Our television screen must have had a million books ? on it 's good plenty more. I would 't throw it away. "

" Same  with mine, " said Margie. She was eleven and hadn't seen as many televook tommy had. He was thirteen.

She said, " where did you find it?" "

" In my house. " he pointed without looking, because he was busy reading ?. 'In attic."

" What 's it about?"

" School. "
