Queen Victoria (reigned 1837-1901) was a transformative British monarch who ascended the throne at age 18, leading a 63 year era of industrial expansion, social change, and massive imperial growth. Known for marrying prince Albert, her nine children, and deep mourning after his death, she restored the monarchy's reputation as a strong, popular figure.

Early Life and Accession 

  • Birth: Born Alexandrina Victoria on May 24, 1819, in Kensington Palace London.
  • Queen at 18: Following the death of her uncle, William lV, she became queen on June 20, 1837.

Marriage and Family 

  • Prince Albert: Victoria married her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840.

  • Children: They had nine children who married into royal families accross Europe, earning her the nickname "Grandmother of Europe".

  • Traditions: She popularized wearing white wedding dress and decorating Christmas trees.

Reign and Impact 

  • The Victorian Age: Her reign saw the British Empire expand to become the largest in history, controlling one-fifth of the world's land.

  • Industrialization: Her era saw rapid development, including railways, steamships and industrial towns.

Later Years and Death 

  • Jubilees: She celebrated her golden Jubilee (1887) and diamond Jubilee (1897), marking her immense popularity.
  • Death: She died on January 22, 1901, at age 81, and was buried beside Albert.
